Next stop: country road! This time the 3rd district is the destination of our exploration tour through the districts of Vienna. We’ll tell you a few things that you should definitely do in the 3rd district.

In the course of our district series, this time we ended up in the 3rd district. We present you ten things that you should experience in the district of Landstraße. You can find numerous other inspirations for the individual districts in the other parts of our series: 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd districts.

On the footsteps of Hundertwasser through Vienna

Definitely one of the most sought-following and most photographed house facades in the city: The Hundertwasserhaus at Kegelgasse 36-38 not only houses 52 apartments and four shops, but also boasts a colorful and green exterior. No matter how often you pass by here, you inevitably stop and marvel at the colorful columns and the playful, expressionistic overall concept, which so unmistakably bears the signature of its designer Friedensreich Hundertwasser. If you think of your last vacation in Barcelona when you see the building, you’re not wrong: It’s hard to deny that Hundertwasser was inspired by Antoni Gaudí.

Only a few meters away you will find the KUNST HAUS WIEN, the next address that can be assigned to the artist. The museum was founded by him and, as an exhibition venue, is one of the most important sights in the city. In addition to the permanent exhibition, which presents excerpts from Hundertwasser’s complete works, the varied, contemporary art installations are also highly recommended. Editor’s tip: After your visit, take a leisurely break at Café Kunst Haus Wien.

Potteria

The district around the Kunst Haus and Hundertwasserhaus offers countless charming corners and shops. If you walk a little uphill in the direction of Rochusmarkt, you will pass the cute Potteria. Here you can learn how to make pottery and glaze and even borrow pottery wheels. We just recently took the beginner’s course and then learned how to properly paint our first pottery pieces and are now on the verge of getting our own potter’s wheel. The introduction by the workshop leaders is personable and accessible and the colors and templates for painting are particularly diverse. But even if you have nothing to do with sound, you can feel at home here. Because the potteria also runs its own café lounge, which provides you with pretty much everything from iced chai lattes to white spritzers. In summer, the beer garden on the street, entwined with fairy lights, is a real highlight.

Lucullus

We love the magical location of the Lucullus, which not only impresses with its sweet guest garden in the warmer months of the year. Here the Mediterranean flair greets you in all its force: you sit beautifully in a blaze of colors under canopies and parasols, surrounded by flowers, fruits and all sorts of attractive things for the eye. Make up your own mind and visit the Lucullus for a coffee or two and start dreaming of your next vacation. It’s definitely possible here, whether indoors or outdoors.

Malipop coffee

If you want to get bogged down in a classic way in the third, please do it in proper style in the Malipop in the Ungargasse. But you don’t come here just for the sake of getting bogged down, but simply because of the operator, who embodies the holy trinity of service staff, DJane and operator in one person and who, with her rigorous manner and delicate taste in music, can undoubtedly be described as a Viennese original. Because real vinyl records are still playing here, continuously. First the A-side, then the B-side, mostly old classics from the 60’s and 70’s from the rock and indie universe. So it’s no wonder that the little Premium-Tschocherl with the walls covered with posters and pictures and the dim atmosphere – the place seems pleasantly smoky, although of course you’re not allowed to smoke here for a long time – has long enjoyed cult status within the scene. If you are lucky, you will meet one or the other protagonist of the Viennese cultural scene here for a nightcap or three.

Vienna Ice Skating Club

Vienna and its traditional Viennese Ice Skating Club, founded in 1867, simply belong together and are an unbeatable team in the winter months. In a unique setting together with your loved ones you can do laps on the ice from October to March and then warm up once more with a hot punch or mulled wine.

In the summer, the ice skating club has been transformed into the beach location Sand in the City until 2021. Unfortunately, there are no more. But the first roller skate disco took place in June 2022. With such a great atmosphere, one can assume that it will not have been the last.

Belvedere Palace and Botanical Garden

The complex of upper and lower Belvedere Palace is not only wonderful to look at, a visit to the museums is highly recommended, especially for anyone interested in art and architecture. In the Upper Belvedere you can stroll through the various art epochs from the Middle Ages to the present day. Afterwards, the castle park invites you to take a relaxing stroll past the fountains and stone figures. In the pre-Christmas period, the Christmas market in front of the Upper Belvedere also awaits your visit. We also recommend a detour to the Botanical Garden. The visit is free and an impressive flora awaits you all year round.

Mint Coffee

Another hotspot that should not be missing from our list is Café Menta. With its combination of noble industrial design and wonderful cosiness, it fascinates. Once you’ve snagged one of the coveted places, you won’t be leaving anytime soon, following all, there’s such a wide range of offers waiting for you. In addition to numerous coffee and breakfast options – breakfast is served daily until 10 p.m. – the changing weekly menu also spoils you with all sorts of delicacies and in the warmer season the chic outdoor dining area is particularly inviting.

We have listed other cool cafes in the 3rd district in another article.

Elvira’s

At Elvira’s you will be spoiled with traditional Ukrainian cuisine that you would otherwise only get from a Ukrainian grandmother: dumplings with different fillings, served with butter and sour cream, Ukrainian pancakes and all sorts of other delicacies. In summer you can sit comfortably in the garden in the pedestrian zone and in winter you can take a seat in the modern yet rustic dining room.

Strandbar Herrmann

Of course, Vienna’s most legendary beach bar should not be missing from our list of highlights in the 3rd district, because there is probably nowhere else more cozy than here in the summer months. Although that can sometimes be a thing with the comfort in view of the good beats that sound from the speakers. The deckchairs are up ab April 2023 ready for you once more on the sandy beach, the refrigerators are fully stocked and provisions are also made for small or large hunger pangs. In addition, you can dust off two cocktails for the price of one every day from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. during Happy Hour.

Theater everywhere

The Academy Theater is considered the little sibling of the Burgtheater and was built between 1911 and 1913. Long-standing disagreements and disputes regarding a second venue were finally resolved and the theater has been open to the public since 1922. The repertoire includes classics as well as contemporary productions, with strong emotions playing a relevant role thanks to the proximity to the audience and the concentration of the space.

It gets even more intimate in the Theater im Gemeindebau: A little further out of town, the Rabenhof-Theater follows a contemporary, pop-cultural approach and reliably provides you with literature, theatre, cabaret, music and everything in between. The annual protest song contest is held here, for example, but names like Stefanie Sargnagel, Maschek or Stermann and Grissemann can also be found in the programme. Next big highlight: The daily press returns on February 15, 2023 with “Die Tagespresse History” finally back to the community building stage.

The goods store

In Marxergasse, two sisters run the goods store, where sustainable hygiene products, regional groceries as well as decorative and gift items are sold as unpackaged as possible. The goods store is also a café and behind a counter you will find fresh pastries, which primarily come from organic bakeries. The light-flooded restaurant is a wonderful place to stop for a cup of coffee or tea.

Arena Vienna

Of course, the arena is no longer an insider tip. But when we’re talking regarding must-do things in the 3rd district, we can’t leave out a visit to the legendary cultural center in Erdberg. Originally, the site was part of a slaughterhouse, with the legendary and powerful occupation in the 70s mainly referring to the foreign slaughterhouse Sankt Marx, which was eventually demolished and had to give way to today’s MGC halls. As a compromise, the city provided the northern inland slaughterhouse, built in the early 20th century as the Municipal Pig Slaughterhouse, which still houses the arena today. It is operated by the grassroots democratic and autonomous association Forum Arena Wien and attracts with a unique scenery alone, a mixture of brick idyll and industrial punk. At several venues – we especially love the open-air concerts in summer – there are always exciting concerts and event series like the Iceberg.
