Federal Council
Bern, 02.15.2023 – On February 15, 2023, the Federal Council adapted the sanctions related to crude oil and petroleum products affecting Russia, thus aligning itself with the latest provisions adopted by the European Union (EU). The measures come into force on February 15, 2023 at 6 p.m.
In response to the persistent attacks on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine by Russia, the EU decided on 4 February 2023 to set price caps applicable to petroleum products from Russia. The EU has also adapted the relevant transitional provisions. The Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (DEFR) had already resumed the ceiling prices for Russian crude oil on December 8, 2022. Today, the Federal Council also supports the new transitional provisions and the price ceilings for petroleum products from Russia.
For example, trading, brokering and transportation of heating oil originating in or coming from Russia is only allowed if the price per barrel does not exceed $45. For gasoline, diesel and oil, the price cap is set at $100 per barrel. These provisions aim to mitigate the negative consequences on the energy supply of third countries and to stem the price increases caused by the military aggression of Ukraine by Russia, while reducing Russia’s oil revenues. .
