Crystal Manuel, a mother living in Chandler’s Ford in Hampshire (UK) was diagnosed with cervical cancer aged 37. If early symptoms have appeared, he will have him it took a year to get this diagnosis. In an interview with English media The Mirrorshe recounts the medical wanderings of which she was the victim.
“If you feel pain, go get checked”
As Crystal Manuel explains to The Mirror, her mother had been diagnosed with uterine cancer when she was younger. “My mother was 49 years old. She was bleeding and the doctors just thought she had fibroids. They then wanted to make him a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) to remove fibroids. But at the time of the intervention, they understood that it was not a question not just fibroids, but uterine cancer“, explains the British.
She adds: “Unfortunately, it was too late. She was diagnosed in November and died in February of the following year, so three months later. Cancer has been picked up too late.” Following this tragic event with her mother, Crystal became more caring regarding their health. In fact, it’s probably late treatment of cancer who left so little chance of survival to his mother. The latter repeated to her, to her and her brothers and sisters: “If you’re in pain, just go get checked out.”
Cancer: she is diagnosed with cancer one year following the first symptoms
The first symptoms occurred when Crystal was 36 years old. She went several times to the general practitioner, but the latter did not detect anything. Faced with the persistence of symptoms, she went back to consult.
By dint of insisting, she ended up getting an exam, cervical screening, known as the smear test. This simple and painless test lasts a few minutes and allows you to check the health of the cervix.
It is a few weeks later that the diagnosis of cervical cancer falls. Despite the shock of the announcement, she did everything to stay strong for her husband and two children, aged 15 and 12. She explains that her positive state of mind helped her a lot during this period. during which she had to endure heavy treatment. The latter included a radical hysterectomy (surgery to remove the uterus)five cycles of chemotherapy, five weeks of daily radiotherapy, followed by two weeks of brachytherapy.
Three months following treatment ended, doctors told Crystal she was in remission. Today, she is still followed regularly to prevent possible recurrences. The mother insists on the importance of listening to your body and to go to a health professional in case of doubt.
