With or without a partner, in the month of love thousands are promoting another celebration: the Self-love or Awareness day for singles which, in New York, is very appropriate since, according to the Department of Health of that city, half of the people experience health problems due to loneliness.
Erica Priscilla Sandoval, mental wellness specialist and founder of Sandoval Psychotherapy Consulting, says the importance of celebrating a n day to self love it became apparent following the pandemic, when “we were hit with the reality that we have become human things instead of human beings.”
“As humans we realized what was important: us and our health,” says the author of the book LatinX in Social. “The pandemic made us see the painful reality that we are not living our lives with purpose and when we are not aligned, it is difficult to take care of ourselves, and give ourselves the love that we really need.”
How can you foster self-love?
Although having a day to encourage self love It’s good, it’s better if you make it a routine. A good way to do it, frédice Sandoval, is to start by taking time for yourself. And, for that, he takes these steps:
Notice how you occupy your time: You will realize that perhaps you are very busy and lack moments of joy due to overwork and saying yes to everything that is asked of you. Balance your schedule better.
Learn to say NO: is a way to love yourself.
Enjoy the little things. Sometimes we forget to enjoy the little moments, like having breakfast in bed and giving you the love and rest you deserve. Do it!
Fix your routine. I invite you to consider creating a routine in which you get up a little earlier, put on some music, meditate, add some aromatherapy or even do some stretchingbefore leaving home.
Put some order at home. If you’re going to love yourself, that can’t happen in a cluttered space, so look around you and create the space you want for yourself. Get rid of what no longer serves you, it’s time.
Give thanks. Believe in what you believe, practice gratitude, meditation or morning prayer. Notice how you feel when you wake up, and take a few minutes to breathe and honor your beliefs. Whether you pray, meditate or sing, it is all wonderful for your soul.
And while a recent study by financial analysts WalletHub says NYC is one of the worst cities to be single, Sandoval emphasizes that stigma should not be overcome.
5 Places to Love Yourself in NYC/NJ
The mental health advisor even assures that one can make NYC the best city to love oneself, and suggests these places…
1. Connect with nature, in places like Pier C, NJ, or Pier 17 in NY, where you can appreciate landscapes from both states.
2. Listen to outdoor concerts, in NYC there is a constant offer in places like Central Park, and other parks in the city.
3. Learn to really breathe. An ideal place for that is Little Island, with 350 species of flowers.
4. Walk across from the Hudson at Brooklyn Bridge Park and enjoy the soothing power of water.
5. Practice yoga in a public park or studios like Yugwelness, with classes for various levels.
But, more important than the place, is that you take a deep breath, meditate and connect with yourself.
