Loss of language ability following diagnosis Difficulty communicating damages family relationships
Mr. Liu, who was diagnosed with aphasia, had a normal comprehension ability, but he lost his language expression ability and might barely communicate in single words. Yiyuan pointed out that at the beginning of Mr. Liu’s diagnosis, communication with his family became very difficult. The family might not understand what Mr. Liu was thinking, which greatly affected the family relationship.
Not only speaking ability, Mr. Liu also has difficulty writing simple sentences. Cherry Yeh, a speech therapist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital who was in charge of the case, said that Mr. Liu actually loved his wife deeply, and he was grateful to her for taking care of her during her illness.
Thanking his wife for not abandoning her during treatment and sending flowers to show her love
Mr. Liu then received rehabilitation training to relearn language, reorganize sentences and match words, and Cherry will also put different objects in front of Mr. Liu to help him match the corresponding words. During one of the treatments, Mr. Liu picked up the flowers in front of him and tried his best to say “send…flowers” to his wife. Although he still mightn’t say “I love you” fluently, his wife understood.
“The patient lost the ability to speak, but he never lost love.”
Caring for patients with aphasia is very difficult. Even if patients actively cooperate with treatment, they may not be able to fully recover. The speech therapist’s job is to rebuild the bridge of communication for patients, which includes expressing love to family members in different ways. Cherry also feels deeply regarding this,
“The treatment process requires patience the most. The patient is a patient, so we must also be patient.”
Patients with aphasia have different symptoms and need the help of caregivers to understand and express
Yiyuan pointed out that patients with aphasia can be roughly divided into three categories, all of which involve language comprehension and expression skills, but they may not be unable to speak fluent sentences. To take care of patients with aphasia, Yiyuan puts forward several key points for caregivers to help them understand the needs of patients.
