Wallonia: a new attempt to reform automobile taxation

In July 2022, Philippe Henry submitted his draft decree. The text had been highly contested. Minister Ecolo returns with a lighter version: the reform will only concern the registration tax, to act in favor of the climate at the time of purchase of the vehicle.

Ecolo and the Walloon Minister Philippe Henry have ideas in mind: a largely amended draft decree under their arm, they are coming back to the charge with a reform of automobile taxation in the south of the country. As a reminder, the registration and circulation taxes are indeed a regional responsibility. The initial proposal is simplified: the changes will only concern the registration tax (TMC), the annual circulation tax remaining unchanged.

In June 2022, the same Minister of Mobility had tabled the first version of his text on the table of the regional government. Car and taxation: the cocktail was obviously explosive. The announcement on the sly by Philippe Henry had quickly sealed the atmosphere within the tripartite PS-MR-Ecolo. In July, victim of serious and anonymous threats related to this file, Philippe Henry had even been placed under police protection.
