2006 Olympic champion in ice dancing Russian figure skater Roman Kostomarov underwent an operation to amputate both hands, Komsomolskaya Pravda reports.
“Kostomarov underwent a second operation. Amputated both hands,” — said the source of the publication. At the same time, the media notes that this information has not yet received official confirmation.
Recall that Kostomarov was hospitalized on January 10 with severe pneumonia. Due to the long stay on ECMO and ventilators, the skater’s peripheral circulation worsened, necrosis began to develop, due to which the feet were amputated. Later it became known that Kostomarov agreed to the amputation of his fingers if the doctors might not restore their blood supply.
“KP” notes that, despite the efforts of the doctors, the athlete’s hands also began to suffer from necrosis and the doctors decided to amputate the hands.
