Un amount of 43 billion euros: this sum bears witness to the extent of the effort that Europe wants to make in order to get back into the race for semiconductors. A race in which, as with everything related to electronics and digital in the broadest sense, it has been left behind by Asia and the United States, paying a high price today.

“This effort is important because it touches on a field that has become highly strategic”, contextualizes Nicolas van Zeebroeck, professor specializing in the digital economy at the Solvay Brussels School (SBS-EM, ULB). “Microchips are absolutely everywhere, from the self-driving car to the electric toothbrush and industrial processes: more chips, more industry, it’s as simple as that. But Europe is totally dependent in this area…”
