Azul Conecta announced its intention to upgrade up to six Cessna Grand Caravans to hybrid-electric aircraft in partnership with the US company Ampaire, a leading company in electric aviation.

The upgrade of the aircraft meets the company’s objectives of zeroing carbon emissions by 2045, adhering to the Global Compact of the United Nations (UN), becoming the first airline in Brazil to be part of the UN Agency dedicated to development business in line with the indicators of the 2030 Agenda.

The Eco Caravan, as Ampaire’s hybrid-electric aircraft is known, reduces fuel consumption and emissions by up to 70%, which can be close to zero when using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The seat cost per km of operation is reduced by 25% or more, depending on the infrastructure of the route used. This reduction helps airlines manage expenses to the benefit of passengers.

The hybrid-electric aircraft preserves the autonomy of the Cessna Grand Caravan, being able to carry up to nine passengers and more than 1,100 kg of cargo. The Eco Caravan’s excellent range and cargo-carrying capacity are superior to all-electric, hydrogen-electric and even hybrid-electric aircraft.

In addition, Azul Conecta in partnership with Ampaire will provide conversion services for the Eco Caravan to other operators in South America interested in innovating and adopting the sustainable method that the project has to offer.
