At this point in the championship, it’s no secret that cell phones are among the items most targeted by criminals on the streets of Brazil’s main cities. The preference for these devices, while not something new, has only increased as we began to focus more and more aspects of our lives on these devices, such as our bank accounts and other personal information.
Unfortunately, this trend has led to an increase in cases of smartphone robbery and theft. Brazil out. According to the National Telecommunications Agencyjust last year, 930.765 IMEI ban requests (the number that identifies each cell phone) were opened in the country – 7% more than in 2021, when 864.849 orders have been registered.
Also according to Anatel, most of these devices were blocked in the first two days following being taken by criminals. Operators were responsible for blocking most of them (768 mil), while the rest (164 mil) was destroyed by public security agencies.
São Paulo appears alone at the top of the ranking that lists the states with the highest numbers of blocking requests, with 455.078 requests. The most populous state in Brazil, it is worth remembering, had also been the champion of cell phone thefts in 2021.
Right behind, comes the state of Rio de Janeiro with 110.480 requests, followed by Minas Gerais, with 52.130from Bahia, with 49.173 and Rio Grande do Sul, with 28.497. Tocantins appears as the state with the lowest number of blocking requests (772), followed by Roraima (1.139), Amapá (1.417), Acre (2.038) and Rondônia (3.588).
It is worth noting that these numbers are just an approximation, since not everyone who has a stolen or stolen cell phone requests the IMEI block. The survey uses data provided by local authorities in each state and by the operators themselves as a reference.
Therefore, always remember to be very careful when using your cell phone in public and to configure your device to minimize any damage in case something happens, especially if you have applications from financial institutions installed on it.
