Psychological distress: those people who are on the phone

In Quebec, suicide is the 7th most common cause of death. The needs are great, which is why the 1-866-call line is available 24 hours a day.

Florence Thibodeau is a crisis worker at the Accalmie Suicide Prevention Center. Every time she picks up the phone, she faces a unique case. At the end of the line, there may be a bereaved mother or a young man regarding to end his life. As much as there is someone who will call me and it is very passive and we will have a discussion. According to’INSPQin Quebec, 1,008 people took their own lives in 2021. Of this number, 77 came from Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec.

The worker has learned to drop out of her job over the years. She admits that it is very important to take care of yourself, to take time for ourselves, to do things that are good. She wants to reassure by saying that her work is undoubtedly less heavy to live with than what people can imagine.
