Dementia: 30 million friends for your neurons

What if owning a pet might reduce the risk of dementia? This is suggested by the findings of a new US study.

To reach this conclusion, researchers at the University of Michigan relied on data from more than 20,000 adults over the age of 50 collected over a period spanning from 2010 to 2016. After statistical analysis, the team scientist thus noticed that the participants aged over 65 with one or more pets showed significantly higher cognitive test scores than those in the same age group who did not. This observation was all the more obvious among the participants who were owners of an animal for more than five years. The latter had a significantly higher verbal memory in the short and long term.

If these results are for the moment of the order of statistical observation and are not a definitive proof of the existence of the “animal effect” on our brain, however, further research may explain these findings. Indeed, many studies have already demonstrated the benefits of owning an animal in the fight once morest cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety or even chronic stress, all recognized risk factors for dementia. But that’s not all ! The scientific world is also interested in the benefits provided by the presence in the home of an animal (especially a dog) for the intestinal microbiota. Or, the links between our second brain (gut) and the first seem much more important today than previously thought. Finally, the presence of a hairball can be of great help in combating the social isolation of the elderly.
