A teacher at Chau Duc Secondary School (Ba Ria – Vung Tau) was criticized for giving 33/34 students in a class below the average score, of which 21 students scored 0.
Exchange with VietNamNetMr. Nguyen Van Truc, Deputy Head of the Education-Training Department of Chau Duc district, said that the teacher under review was Ms. T. who teaches Physics and Technology in grade 8, Chau Duc Secondary School.
In the first 15-minute test of the 2022-2023 school year in class 8A6, Ms. T. scored students too low. Class 8A6 has 34 students, 33 students are below the average score. Of these, 21 students got a score of 0, 5 students got a score of 1, 7 students got a score of 2, 3, 4. Only 1 student got a score of 10. The reason according to Ms. T was that the students looked down on Technology and refused to accept it. Studying, when I was given a problem, I mightn’t do it, so I got a low score.
This “tragic” transcript of class 8A6 was uploaded by Ms. T. to the Vietnamese education network VNEDU. The school principal discovered that she had worked with Ms. T. and asked the teacher to re-examine her. However, Ms. T. did not agree because that way the students looked down on them and refused to study.
According to Mr. Truc, the Board of Directors of Chau Duc Secondary School is not definitive regarding this, so it still gets grade 8A6 on the Vietnamese education network VNEDU. The scoreboard was spread on social media with mixed opinions.
Understanding this, Chau Duc Department of Education and Training worked with the Board of Directors of Chau Duc Secondary School, reviewing the principal and vice principal of the school. The department also requires the school to develop rules, a test must have a percentage of points from average or higher to enter the book, if not, it must be re-tested.
Mr. Truc said that if a test scores 60% below the average, it may be that the teacher has an inappropriate topic, the students do not understand the lesson, or the teacher sets a topic that does not teach. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the school, which is specifically the subject team, to review. According to Mr. Truc, the results of students evaluate the strength of teachers. Sometimes schools do not have clear rules, so teachers finish teaching, give students a test, and how much they score will be included in the notebook. Education has rules but must be educational. Currently, the evaluation by scores is limited.
In class 8A6, although no re-testing was allowed, the tests following Ms. T. were more ‘open’. The result of Technology subject of class 8A6 semester I is just over 10% of students in the class below the average score.
“Here the teacher is wrong because if the student refuses to study or disregard the subject, it is the teacher’s responsibility. Teachers must make sure that this does not happen. The management board of Chau Duc Secondary School is also not definitive, “ Truc said.
According to Mr. Truc, Ms. T. was reviewed by the Board of Directors of Chau Duc Secondary School. The role of the school principal is weak, there are no specific regulations, so this situation occurs. The Department of Education and Training reminded the principal and also reminded schools throughout the district to learn from experience.
“Definitely the year-end evaluation of the principal of Chau Duc Secondary School, if the highest, only completes the task. For Ms. T. has been reviewed, so she will be closely monitored by the school. In case of necessity, the school will issue test questions for students, and the subject team will mark them.” Mr. Truc said.
