I Squared Capital Creates nLighten, Europe’s Leading Datacenter Platform

AI Squared Capital, through its ISQ Global Infrastructure Fund III, created nLighten, a cutting-edge datacenter platform dedicated to providing solutions for both traditional and low-latency use. AI Squared has committed over $500 million of equity to support nLighten’s goal of bringing high-quality colocation services to underserved cities and regions across Europe. nLighten is part of I Squared Capital’s global data center portfolio, which includes KIO in the Americas and BDx in Asia.

nLighten is under the leadership of former Equinix senior executives such as Harro Beusker, co-founder and CEO, and Chad McCarthy, co-founder and chief technology officer. Harro has held a number of leadership roles at Equinix, including senior vice president of corporate development for EMA, managing director in Germany and the Netherlands and interim managing director in France, and Chad was most recently the global head of engineering development and planning master of Equinix. Both have been instrumental in building Equinix’s business in the EMEA region, as well as key global initiatives such as its hyperscale platform, xScale. Other members of the management team are Christian Zipp, former Vice President of Sales Germany and the Netherlands for Digital Real Estate and previously Regional Vice President of Sales Germany for Equinix, and Martin Essig, former Chief Executive Officer from Telecity Germany.

nLighten’s initial focus will be on Germany, where it is expected to open ten strategic locations in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hannover, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart in the second half of 2023. Through the combination of a national presence and partnerships for innovative connectivity, nLighten aims to deliver 2-6 millisecond latency for most 5G and end-of-stream users. The company is also looking to install innovative energy solutions, including grid stabilization and heat recovery and transfer to nearby buildings and utility networks.

“With our team of experienced professionals, we intend to make a major change in the data center industry,” said Harro Beusker, CEO and co-founder of nLighten. “We will be close to customers, bring connectivity ecosystems to regional markets and actively support the energy transition.”
