CAIRO, 8th February, 2020 (WAM) — The UAE participated in the work of the 111th session of the Arab Economic and Social Council at the level of senior officials, which was held today at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, in preparation for its ministerial session scheduled for tomorrow.
The country’s delegation was headed by Juma Mohammed Al Kait, Assistant Undersecretary for International Trade Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, and the delegation included Ahmed bin Suleiman Al Malik, Head of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Sidi Ould Sidi Bouna, Technical Advisor to the Minister of Finance and head of the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, with the participation of Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector of the League of Arab States, and in the presence of heads and members of Arab delegations, directors and representatives of joint Arab action organizations.
The Council’s agenda included topics that represent a priority for joint Arab economic and social development work, foremost of which is the preparation of the Arab Strategy for Communications and Information, which represents the Arab Digital Agenda (2023-2033),
The focus of the session’s work on the Greater Arab Free Trade Area and the developments of the customs union is a major issue that requires work to be completed in the required manner, in a manner that enables the achievement of its desired goals, especially in the current stage, as well as the issue of investment in Arab countries.
The Council’s agenda also includes a number of economic and social items that cover the concerns of the Arab world in the economic and social fields, including the item related to preparing the economic file for the upcoming Arab summit in Saudi Arabia and the development summit in Nouakchott next November, which is the Greater Arab Free Trade Zone; And the developments of the customs union and a draft resolution on investment in the Arab countries and the challenges facing food security as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and other issues that respond to the aspirations of the Arab peoples for development and prosperity in light of a world characterized by major political and economic blocs.
It is scheduled that senior officials will submit a report on the results of their work and draft resolutions and recommendations to the ministerial session (111) of the Economic and Social Council tomorrow.
