“We must get women out of the feeling of accountability”. It is with these words that Lucile Quillet, journalist and member of the Observatory for the economic emancipation of women, introduces her new note, during her presentation on Thursday February 9, 2023. Written with Lucile Peytavin, historian and author of essay The cost of manhood, this report is the second of this observatory, which depends on the Women’s Foundation. According to the authors, economic inequalities between women and men remain glaring.
“Women earn on average 15.5% less than men. Even today, in 75% of heterosexual couples, the woman has a lower income than her spouse,” their report reads. To remedy this, they want to inform, document the mechanisms that maintain these inequalities, propose solutions and above all inform women regarding all of these dysfunctions. Making information a primary issue to restore greater fairness.
Teach women to manage their budget
An observation shared by Morgane Dion, co-founder of Plan Cash, a medium that helps women learn financial management. In this podcast, to listen to above, you will hear her talk regarding the reasons for the lack of learning regarding financial management when you are a woman. “The male media talk to men regarding investing, risk taking, cryptocurrencies. While women’s magazines talk to women regarding sales. We place them in a position of spendthrift and not of investor,” she argues.
You will also hear the advice of Morgane Dion from Plan Cash to learn how to manage your budget. Above all, she recommends that women build up precautionary savings, the basis of sound financial management, according to her.
In addition to savings and investment advice, Morgane Dion also advocates for public financial aid to be more accessible to women. “There is work to be done so that women know their rights”. An opinion along the lines of the recommendations of the report of the Observatory of the economic emancipation of women. For Lucile Quillet, of the Observatory of the economic emancipation of women, “it is precisely the responsibility of politics to bring them equality, rather than them fighting with their small hands”.
Getting out of financial dependence
Learning financial management is one of the conditions for getting out of dependence on a spouse. This is all the more important as financial dependence remains a major obstacle for women who are victims of domestic violence, and in particular economic violence. Not having sufficient resources, many women today are unable to leave a relationship, which is dangerous for them.
Finally, Lucile Quillet recalls that financial dependence in the couple inevitably generates a feeling of accountability. “When you are the person who brings in the least income within the couple, you are probably going to be the person who will do the most invisible and unpaid domestic work”, she underlines. A vicious circle that maintains gender inequalities and prevents their emancipation.
