No GSM network in the future House of Parliamentarians: a mistake that will still cost Wallonia dearly

While the image of the Walloon Parliament is already tarnished by repeated scandals, here is a new episode which once more risks tarnishing the reputation of the Walloon authorities.

LN24 reveals this Wednesday morning a new blunder in the construction of the future House of Parliamentarians, which is to be inaugurated in September in Namur, the Walloon capital. The authorities of Parliament have recently noticed that no GSM network was passing through the buildings under construction. In question, it seems, the excessive insulation, so that the building is passive in terms of energy.

Except that not being able to make a phone call in Parliament is simply unthinkable and incompatible with the duties of MPs.

Consequently, an emergency meeting of the authorities of Parliament was held a few days ago in order to correct this blunder, which we owe to the former management teams and in particular to the services of the famous clerk, Frédéric Janssens, now suspended from his functions. The Bureau, the governing body of parliament (which includes members of the majority and the opposition) had to pass a public contract last week so that GSM antennas might be placed quickly on the new building.

The cost of this oversight is not known exactly, but the public contract awarded is valid below the threshold of 150,000 euros, specifies LN24. It’s a nice sum, certainly in a Wallonia where every euro counts…

As a reminder, the cost of the work of the House of Parliamentarians has exploded in recent weeks. Initially estimated at 10 million euros, the costs would eventually reach nearly 46 million euros.
