Safe Internet Day: learn about the origin, challenges and importance of the date | TC Detective

This Tuesday, February 7th, Safe Internet Day is celebrated, an internationally celebrated date that seeks to highlight the topic of online security, which has gained more and more space.

But what is the origin of the date and what does it seek to raise awareness? Also, what are the main alerts for the context of this date in 2023? Detective TudoCelular went following the information for you.

Origin

Safe Internet Day was originated by the European Union, through the Insafe Network. The creation took place on February 8, 2004, with the aim of encouraging the free and safe use of computers and cell phones by institutions and users, with a main focus on younger people.

Despite appearing through the “Old Continent” block, the date is already present in more than 200 countries. In Brazil, it began to be remembered in 2009. In other words, this is the 15th edition held in Brazil – and the 20th globally.

Among the topics on the agenda for reflection are debates on Fake News, cyberbullying, sextortion and digital citizenship. All of them that generate a series of uncertainties and losses in a series of areas to those affected.

According to Felipe Olivaes, from KingHost’s security team, this day serves as a movement to engage and understand the challenges of how to defend yourself online.

“It is time to promote reflection on security, which is fundamental for us to discover the current and future challenges of how to defend oneself online. Everyone must get involved in the movement, because it is essential for us to expand the information reach network.”

Cybersecurity in the sights of companies

The importance of raising awareness of the issue addressed by Safer Internet Day can be translated into numbers. A mapping done by the company specializing in talents Robert Half indicates that cybersecurity professionals are in the sights of companies for hiring.

The highlights of segments that most seek this type of professional are the financial market, telecom, ecommerce and pharmaceutical market. In addition, the list of most wanted workers includes information security manager, information security coordinator and security analyst. DevSecOps.

The main technical knowledge sought for online security positions are experience with process implementation, and LGPD, second language – mainly English –, cloud security, cryptography, SIEM tools, firewall and antivirus.

Cybersecurity in Brazil

Other numbers point to the need for even more special attention to cybersecurity. According to a report by Fortinet’s FortGuard Labs, Brazil suffered 18.8 billion attempted intrusions between July and September of last year.

During the third quarter of 2022, our country was the hardest hit by cyber attacks in all of Latin America.

When picking up a survey carried out by SurfShark for the first three months of 2022, Brazil ranked 12th among the countries that suffered most from data leak episodes.

A total of 286,000 Brazilians had their data exposed on the internet during the period. Leaked sensitive information includes email, passwords, phone numbers and personal documents – such as CPF and RG.

How to protect yourself from digital crime?

After all, how not to be a victim of digital crimes? Some tips can help you stay away from dangers in the online environment. One of them is to keep your software always up to date, to keep security holes discovered always corrected, and to use a device protection solution, with updates in real time.

Also, it is not recommended to keep the same password across multiple applications or websites. This is because, if there is a leak on a specific site, cybercriminals will be able to exploit it in other logins. It’s also worth always enabling two-factor authentication when available, preferably using an authenticator app.

While browsing the internet, it is necessary to pay attention to the domain of the sites, to find out if there is any change in relation to the original, which might send you to a malicious page.

In a business context, performing periodic intrusion tests on your systems and regular training on information security with employees are other welcome suggestions.
