Today, Monday (February 6, 2023), the Tunisian Directors Association said that director Abdellatif Ben Ammar died at the age of 80, leaving behind a few but distinct collection of artworks.
The association said in a statement that the deceased “is from the first generation of Tunisian directors who experienced the beginnings of the seventh art in Tunisia, as he had his first cinematic experiences at the age of 22.”
The late director was born in April 1943 and studied mathematics in Tunisia before obtaining a diploma in photography from the Higher Institute for Cinematographic Studies in Paris in 1965.
After his return to Tunisia, the Tunisian Company for Film Production and Development appointed him as its representative, and he participated in making a group of short films, and he also worked as an assistant to a number of foreign and Tunisian directors.
He presented his first feature film in 1970, entitled “A Simple Story Like This,” and contributed to the establishment of the National Film Library, and left a distinguished mark in the world of filmmaking, directing and writing.
Among his films: “Al-Nakhil Al-Jarih” in 2010 and “Nagham Al-Na’oura” in 2002. He also won the Golden Tanit of the Carthage Film Festival in 1980 for the movie “Aziza”, and before that he won the Silver Tanit in 1974 for the movie “Sajnan”.
