The epicenter was in the population of West Seneca, located in the state of New York and very close to the city of Buffalo, which recently suffered the consequences of the so-called ‘Storm of the century’.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the tremor at 7:09 a.m. (Eastern Time).) which had an intensity of 3.8 on the Richter scale.
“Literally rocking and rolling this morning!! Two loud booms and the house shook!” she wrote on Twitter @mreay18.
“I live a few blocks from West Seneca. My son lives right where the epicenter would be. Heard a loud bang at 6:15 am Felt the shaking a bit. I have been through many of these, ”he said on the same social network @ NickCultrara716
Mark Poloncarz, an Erie County official reported on his official Twitter account that the earthquake was very strong and that he had a great scare. “I felt my car crash into my house. I jumped out of my bed ”, reads the message from the US citizen.
The shock wave that the USGS released showed that it might be felt even in Canadian territory, although with a lesser magnitude. The constant of the videos found on social networks is that it felt like an explosion that vibrated several houses and buildings in all the affected populations.
The movement was of such magnitude that it might even be felt in Greenland, the Danish Geological Institute announced. “The strong tremors in Turkey were clearly recorded by the Danish and Greenlandic seismographs,” said seismologist Tine Larsen.
The scientist said that eight minutes following the earthquake, the wave reached the east coast of Greenland, spreading throughout the territory.
Turkey and Syria suffer from earthquakes; images go around the world
The death toll from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on the open Richter scale registered in southern Turkey, near the border with Syria, rose to more than 2,300, according to data provided by the authorities of both countries and the White Helmets. Only in the first of these areas more than a thousand deaths were reported.
According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquakes left more than 1,400 deaths in that country alone and more than 8,000 injured.
More than 800 people died in Syria as a result of the earthquake, indicated a new balance of the government and aid workers in the rebel areas.
In the regions in the hands of the rebels, near Turkey, it is the White Helmets (rescuers who mobilize in those areas) who count the victims. “147 died and more than 340 injured, according to a provisional balance in the province of Idlib and the surroundings of Aleppo”, in the north of the country, this group had initially announced on its Twitter account.
