Every day to the super around the corner or once a week all the bargains? With the current cost crisis, we are more critical of our expenses, also in the supermarket. In the section The Bonnet every week we talk to a Dutchman regarding his supermarket strategy in times of inflation.
How: Bas van der Velden (23)
Earn a living: as a host at a gym
Lives in: Utrecht
Bas’s receipt:
- Tomatoes 0.80 euros
- 1 kg of low-fat cottage cheese 2.19 euros
- 4 luxe hamburgerbroodjes 1,49 euro
- 2 free-range chicken burgers 2.29 euros
- Lamb’s lettuce 1.09 euros
- Total 7.86 euros
Is this for dinner?
“No, this is lunch.”
I think you exercise a lot.
“I train four or five times a week.”
Do you also buy certain food products?
“During the bulk – a period in which you build muscle mass – I buy a lot of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Then I really eat 3,500 calories.”
Per day?!
“Yeah. So my wallet didn’t like that too much either.”
How do you do that now that everything is much more expensive?
“I started to pay more attention. Today was such a moment: I wanted to get hamburger buns, but I saw that they cost 1.49 euros. Then I thought for a moment: I’ll get a few Italian buns, because they are cheaper. But because it was four hamburger buns, I still tacked. So I pay attention, but also get what I like. Making a nice sandwich following exercising, I enjoy that. I work for it.”
Are there any products that you are now leaving behind?
“Especially fish, salmon. I then get those fats and proteins from something else, such as quark. That only costs 2.19 euros.”
This is for lunch only. Are you going to the supermarket once more tonight?
“Probably yes. I live with my girlfriend and we have shared groceries. Then we really pay attention. We usually cook for two days and freeze the rest. So then you have a maximum of 40 or 50 euros in the week.”
Apart from such purchases.
“I pay for my sports nutrition myself.”
We just moved in together, so you have to watch what goes out and what comes in.
There is usually one person in the relationship who is more price conscious. Who is that with you?
“I’m more on the money. But we’re both paying attention. We’ve just moved in together, so you have to pay attention to what goes out and what comes in. Everything is of course more expensive, so you also have to be able to see what you’re left with. So that you can continue to do fun things. That is also important.”
Do you have any tips for readers regarding healthy food that is not too expensive?
“Cottage cheese! Lots of low-fat cottage cheese. It contains a lot of protein. And it is filling. If you want a healthy snack, that’s a good one.”
Always from the house brand?
“Yeah, I like him fine.”
Do you also go to other supermarkets for the ‘regular’ groceries?
“We also go to the Jumbo. Depends on what we want to eat and what’s on offer where, because we also pay attention to that. The offers determine where we do our shopping.”
