(PLO)- Although implementation still faces some difficulties, digital classrooms in Ho Chi Minh City have partly solved the shortage of teachers when implementing the 2018 general education program.
The school year 2022-2023 is the first year that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training cooperates with the Ho Chi Minh City Digital Transformation Support and Consulting Center to deploy digital classes at Trung Lap Thuong Primary School, Cu Chi District and Primary School. Thanh An, Can Gio district.
These two units have the same shortage of English and computer science teachers, but it is difficult to recruit and transfer teachers and teachers from other places due to the remote location.

Students are excited
When it’s time to learn English, students of grade 5/2 of Trung Lap Thuong Primary School move to a function room with fully equipped equipment.
English class has two teachers. In which, an assistant teacher directs and supervises the class and a teacher teaches through a projector screen.
Enthusiastically speaking and building lessons, Tran Gia Bao expressed: “Although she teaches through the projector screen, the teaching method is very easy to understand. Moreover, she also organizes many games to make the class more exciting. I look forward to this class.”
Nguyen Van Toi, the school’s principal, said that the digital class was piloted at the end of November with computer science and English for six classes of grades 4 and 5 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The application of digital classrooms helps to effectively solve the temporary shortage of teachers. Currently, the school can only contract one English teacher, one visiting computer teacher, while according to the requirements of the 2018 general education program, there must be at least one computer teacher and two English teachers. Without digital classes, it is difficult to teach English and informatics to all students.
According to Mr. Toi, the implementation of digital classrooms also helps teachers enhance innovation in methods and application of information technology in teaching.
“The school regularly arranges teachers to attend these classes to learn. The school’s teachers are mainly the 7X generation who are afraid to change, information technology is still limited, hopefully with the digital classroom, they will change their perception and innovate methods “- Mr. Toi added.
Although she teaches through the projector screen, the way of teaching is easy to understand.
At Thanh An Primary School, Can Gio District, the digital class is conducted with English for students in grades 4 and 5 in early December. Students have four lessons per week on Mondays.
Le Huu Binh, the school’s principal, said that as required, the school must have two English teachers to ensure the implementation of the new program. However, the school has only one teacher and in the past time, it has to mobilize this teacher to teach more classes (pay the prescribed fee) to ensure that the number of lessons is sufficient.
In the process of direct teaching, new teachers can understand each individual student as well as the difficulties they face when learning. This will be somewhat limited in the implementation of the digital class due to spatial separation.
Therefore, to overcome, it is necessary to train teachers on the spot to improve their capacity. Specifically, teaching assistant teachers need to be trained to understand their expertise, skills and make up for the shortfalls caused by online learning.
Besides, the school can find social activities near the school so that the children can practice more.

Need financial support for teaching assistants
Besides the advantages, Mr. Toi also admitted that digital classrooms are spatially distant, making it difficult for students and teachers to interact with each other. To solve the above problem, the school has arranged an assistant teacher to supervise, guide, manage as well as support the main teacher in the teaching process.
“However, the current assistant teachers are teachers who lack lessons. Even though they have been trained, and before each lesson, the teaching teacher and the assistant teacher have an exchange regarding lessons and lesson plans. However, due to the lack of professional training, it is difficult to meet all of them, “- Mr. Toi added.
On the other hand, the school has invested a huge amount of money to upgrade computers and basic transmission lines for digital classrooms.
“In order for the digital classroom to be effective, and if expansion is taken into account, it is necessary to provide professional training for teaching assistants so that they can somewhat grasp the program and subject knowledge. Besides, it is necessary to have a regime for teaching assistant teachers so that they can feel secure in their work,” added Mr. Toi.
Acknowledging the above problem, Mr. Binh also said that the classroom teacher was also assigned the task of teaching assistants for digital classes. “English is a specific subject, so it is necessary to train more knowledge for this team to be able to better support the main teachers. In addition, it is also necessary to consider the cost of supporting them. The school also proposes to build an additional digital classroom at the campus in Thieng Lieng hamlet, because currently English teachers have to move between two schools very hard” – Mr. Binh added.•
Will consider expanding class number
Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, shared that digital classroom teachers are all selected, have good expertise, and are able to teach well in the digital environment.
“Currently, the implementation of digital classrooms has been stable and has achieved good results in ensuring the organization of teaching English and informatics in schools lacking teachers. Students enjoy and absorb well, ensuring full access throughout the program. Teaching assistant teachers also learn good teaching methods. On the basis of assessing the advantages and disadvantages, the department will consider expanding not only in units with a shortage of teachers but also in units that have conditions to deploy to help improve professional quality. At the same time, the department will also direct the expansion of other subjects lacking teachers to help units organize teaching and comprehensive education for students. When expanding, the department will comprehensively evaluate all issues, especially the teaching staff, pay more attention to professionalism as well as remuneration, “- Mr. Quoc said.
