Drag shows in Vienna: Regular and one-off events

Whether the term “Drag” deriving from “dressed as a girl” or from the train of a dress (to drag) is essentially the same. It should be much more important to regard doing drag as an art form of entertainment in its own right. Dragqueens (and – kings!) are performance artists who consciously play with stereotypical gender roles.

The sometimes exaggerated depiction of female and male characteristics is often meant to be satirical. At the same time, drag is an open declaration of love for fashion, glamor & glitz. And although far from every performance has a political content, the art form per se tries to promote the visibility of the queer community.
