At the shelter Adoption homeless rabbits of Quebec, the current situation is unprecedented.
Nancy Lachance, lawyer and founder of the shelter, explains that not a week goes by without being contacted to obtain referrals for veterinary services.
“Few clinics take on new clients and especially few veterinarians specialize in exotic animals, which includes rabbits,” she laments.
The rabbit is however the third most popular pet in Quebec homes and requires daily care to stay healthy.
In the event of illness or infection, medical assistance is required within 48 hours to ensure survival.
“Last week, an adopter showed up with his sick rabbit. he finally managed to get a clinic appointment, but too late. he died a few days following his consultation,” she laments.
