WASHINGTON (Archyde.com) – The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits fell unexpectedly last week, while the labor market remained strong despite rising borrowing costs and exacerbating recession fears.

The Labor Department said on Thursday that the number of new applications for unemployment benefits fell by 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted level of 183,000 in the week ending Jan. 28. Economists polled by Archyde.com had expected the number to reach 200,000 applications in the same week.
