After ExxonMobil, Shell is also announcing record profits. Forty billion dollars in 2022, double from the previous year. This is the largest profit ever made by the British oil giant.
Like ExxonMobil and other energy companies, Shell’s business was boosted by a rebound in demand for hydrocarbons following a drop during the pandemic. All have also benefited from the decline in Russian oil and gas exports since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine, which has pushed prices up.
Billions of dollars
For its part, the American ExxonMobil announced a record profit of nearly 56 billion dollars, and paid billions of dollars to shareholders, attracting the wrath of the White House, while the United States is in full energy crisis, with bills soaring by more than 13%.
Joe Biden had tweeted that the only thing “ what prevents the big oil companies from increasing their production is their decision to pay billions to shareholders instead of reinvesting profits ».
Superprofits tax
The European Union and the British are waiting for these big energy companies at the turn and want to impose a 33% tax on the superprofits of 2022. Thus, the French TotalEnergies will have to pay two billion euros in “temporary solidarity contribution”, according to the term used by the European Commission. A contribution that will affect future investments, denounces Patrick Pouyanné, the group’s president.
ExxonMobil, for its part, seized the Court of Justice of the European Union at the end of December not to have to pay this contribution.
