The 5C collective, a future global niche to structure short circuits in Wallonia?

1. “Local” phase: a variety of experiments in short circuits (2010-2013)

2. “Inter-local” phase: the emergence of the first networks (2013-2020)

3. “Trans-local” phase: the global ambition of the 5C Collective (2020-)

4. Global phase: the future of the 5C Collective?

Conclusion

For the past ten years, Wallonia (French-speaking region of Belgium), like other regions in Europe, has seen the emergence on its territory of a large number of initiatives seeking to relocate and shorten the food distribution chain. These multiple initiatives in various forms suggest responses to the ecological, economic and social challenges posed by the industrialization of the dominant agri-food sector (climate change, soil erosion, health crises, loss of autonomy and profitability for farmers, etc., see in particular Renting et al., 2003; Deverre and Lamine, 2010; Goodman, 2013; Mundler and Laughrea, 2016; IPES-Food, 2018; Berti, 2020).

With this in mind, and although their positive effects in terms of sustainability must be formulated with nuance (Forssell and Lankoski, 2015; Maréchal et al., 2019), short food circuits are studied mainly because of their high transformative potential (Chiffoleau, 2019; …
