Economic activity in Chile fell for the fourth consecutive month in December 2022 | Economy

The fall in the Imacec in the last month of last year was explained by commerce and the manufacturing industry, a result that was partly offset by the growth in services.

The Central Bank announced this Wednesday that in December 2022 the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (Imacec) fell 1.0% compared to the same month of the previous year

The seasonally adjusted series increased 0.4% compared to the previous month and fell 1.0% in twelve months.

The month recorded one business day less than December 2021.

The fall of this index in December 2022 it was less than what the market projected; yes, it was the fourth consecutive that was registered. In November the Imacec fell 2.5% compared to the same month of the previous year; in October the drop was 1.2%; and in September it showed a fall of 0.3%.

The fall of the Imacec in the last month of last year, said the issuing institute, “was explained by trade and the manufacturing industry, a result that was partly offset by the growth of services”.

Meanwhile, the increase in Imacec in seasonally adjusted terms “was determined by the performance of services.”

The Central Bank added that the non-mining Imacec presented a decrease of 1.1% in twelve months, while in seasonally adjusted terms, it grew 0.5% compared to the previous month.

In its report, the Central Bank detailed that the production of goods fell 1.8%result explained by the performance of the manufacturing industry that decreased 5.0%.

On the other hand, “mining presented a growth of 1.2%, and the rest of goods a fall of 0.4%.”

In seasonally adjusted terms, the production of goods presented an increase of 0.8% compared to the previous month.

Commerce

Commercial activity presented a decrease of 6.4%a result that was explained “by retail trade, where lower sales in supermarkets, large stores and specialized food, beverage, clothing, footwear and household equipment stands out.”

For its part, added the issuing institute, “wholesale trade presented falls in most of its linesbeing the sales of household goods and construction materials the ones with the highest incidence”.

Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted figures showed growth of 0.2% compared to the previous month, driven by wholesale trade.

Services

By last, services increased by 2.3%a result mainly explained “by the performance of personal services and, to a lesser extent, by business services”.

In accordance with seasonally adjusted figures, service activities presented growth of 0.8% compared to the previous month. “This result was mainly affected by transportation services,” the report concluded.
