NTT Com Launches Revamped SkyWay SDK for More Versatile Development of Online Communication Services

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the international communications and ICT solutions company of the NTT group, today announced the immediate release of the revamped SkyWay software development kit (SDK). The new SkyWay SDK makes it easier than ever to implement real-time voice, video and data communication for apps and websites.

People interested in planning or developing online communication services can sign up for a free webinar to learn more regarding the revamped SkyWay SDK. The event can be followed in person (50 people) at NTT Communications headquarters in Tokyo, or online (100 people) at 3 pm (Japan time) on February 23.

Simple to use and supported with extensive documentation, SkyWay requires no special technical skills or knowledge of voice/video communication or server creation. It can be used for a wide variety of applications such as online classes, IoT and robots. To date, SkyWay has been implemented for the development of more than 20,000 services.

SkyWay is suitable for a variety of call formats, including voice and video, individual and group calls, and video communication while screen sharing. It is also a cross-platform SDK for developing communication services tailored to specific industries and business categories. it also delivers high quality international calls by setting up servers to relay communications to/from Asia, North America and Europe.1 In addition, SkyWay can be used free of charge for testing and developing the service until the user’s service is actually launched. Rates are service-scalable and billing is implemented on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, online communication has rapidly diversified and now often includes events involving dozens of people, as well as communication bots. In response, NTT Com decided to update SkyWay’s architecture and launch it as a new service with enhanced features for greater versatility, including:

  • More concurrent calls (expanded from 20 to 100 max)

  • Terminal load reduction according to the end user environment (simulcasting2 and API for flexible streaming/receiving of media such as specific video/audio only)

  • Authentication and authorization to control video/audio streaming for each end user

Below are two examples of SkyWay’s expanded functionality.

1. Virtual office

SkyWay can be used to create a system for an office-wide presentation reaching up to 100 people, with simultaneous transmission allowing people to receive audio/video appropriately tuned to each user, such as low-resolution video to reduce system load and battery life for mobile devices or terminals with low processing power. Additionally, attendance can be controlled for private conferences.

2. Remote work support

SkyWay can also be used to create a system that allows a supervisor to remotely instruct multiple people on a job site, using video for detailed instructions and audio only if simple verbal instructions are sufficient. Selective use of video and/or audio allows the system to reach many people with minimal load.

Service requests will be accepted starting this Tuesday, January 31st. For details, visit the website or contact an NTT Com sales representative. For service fees, see here. (Partly in Japanese only)

In the future, NTT Com hopes to further upgrade SkyWay, expanding the range of voice and video calls, improving data communications to sync more people, and supporting game platforms for live streaming and the metaverse. Additionally, voice and video calling experiences will be improved. SkyWay’s new features to measure quality and analyze issues will increasingly improve video and voice in various environments. NTT Com’s goal is to continue developing SkyWay-related businesses to support the evolution of real-time communication and its easy implementation by non-experts in a world where people communicate meaningfully through the power of digital technology.

1 Technology that allows a terminal to select the most suitable relay device to minimize the delay between terminals (granted patent no. 6254620).

2 Technology to stream the same video to different endpoints using different bit rates, such as low resolution for mobile devices with limited processing power and bandwidth, and high resolution for PCs.
