FC Sion: Celestini has a lot on the board

‘We’re not going anywhere like this!’ Despite the point snatched ten once morest eleven on the field of Servette, Fabio Celestini cast an uncompromising look on his team.

As if he were measuring the huge building site that stands before him.

“In the two games once morest Lugano and Servette, we didn’t deserve more than a point, coldly released the successor of Paolo Tramezzani. We cannot deliver such a first half in a derby with the squad we have. There are too many ups and downs. We are always in the reaction, instead of acting.’

The Vaudois technician was nevertheless ‘rejoiced’ to see his team at La Praille. He had built it to take the game on his own with a four-man midfielder – Cyprien, Zuffi, Grgic and Araz – technically very fine and two full-backs – Lavanchy and Baltazar – capable of taking the lane. ‘We can be down 2-0 at the break, it’s true. But I would have accepted it if my team had played both ways and if Servette had been more successful,’ he continues.

March 1 deadline

Fabio Celestini has a month ahead of him to find the right chemistry. FC Sion will indeed play its season on March 1 at Tourbillon with the quarter-final of the Swiss Cup once morest Lugano.

The Cup today seems to be the only way offered to the inhabitants of Sédu to find the European scene next season, one last time it should be specified if Christian Constantin were to withdraw on June 30, 2024 as he has been suggesting for weeks. Fabio Celestini will probably quickly admit it: FC Sion is above all a team capable of brilliant moves. His inconstancy penalizes him too much over the length of a championship.

By March 1, he will have to reinvent a defense. In Geneva, Dimitri Cavaré, Nathanaël Saintii, struggling in the middle, and Baltazar, overtaken on the left, failed. With Joël Schmied, Reto Ziegler and François Moubandjé, the coach benefits from real alternatives. Unhappy once morest Lugano in a left-back position that no longer really suits him, Reto Ziegler can assert himself in a more axial role as the boss of the defense. Wasn’t he hired for that this winter?

‘It was not a gift to let him in’

‘You have to put all the pieces of the puzzle together’, admits Fabio Celestini. The most beautiful of all remains of course Mario Balotelli. In Geneva, Super Mario made Super Mario.

Introduced at the break, he armed a strike on his first action, which was very miserable if we compare it with the fireworks launched by the Sédunois fans before playing in the register which has been his since September 3: a real involvement in the match, but always this reluctance to chain the races even when his team evolves in numerical inferiority.

“It was not a gift to bring him into such circumstances, underlines Fabio Celestini. He was alone in front. He defended. But perhaps his mere presence was cause for concern for the opponent.’ Maybe yes…
