Woman who has been vomiting for years discovers syndrome

For almost two years, practically every month, a 23-year-old American woman was hospitalized with severe vomiting. The symptoms were always the same: nausea, abdominal pain and uncontrollable vomiting.

The patient has diabetes, and doctors soon associated the situation with gastroparesis, a condition characterized by difficulty emptying the stomach in a healthy way that is common in patients with difficulty controlling insulin levels.

However, the tests all came back negative for the disease, and the medicine had no effect. It was only when the young woman reported smoking marijuana regarding five times a week that the doctors were able to make the diagnosis: cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome.

The disease is basically caused by the chronic use of cannabis, and its main symptoms are nausea and vomiting. Although many patients use the substance precisely to combat nausea, in cases of abuse, the effect can be the opposite.

People with the syndrome, including the patient studied, usually spend hours taking a hot bath, which improves their symptoms.

The young woman stopped using cannabis, and the symptoms disappeared. However, two months later, she started smoking once more and experienced severe nausea and vomiting. The woman’s case report was published in the scientific journal American Journal of Case Reports.
