Angeline and Eduard, a couple from Geel, celebrate the first oak wedding in Belgium: “It’s strong, neither of them is yet a hundred years old”

For the first time, oak weddings are celebrated in Belgium. A couple living in Houthalen are celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary on Monday, reports the European Supercentenarian Organization (ESO).

Eduard Cuyvers and Angeline Haeseldonckx were married on January 30, 1943 in Geel, according to the marriage certificate verified by the Belgian ESO representative, Anthony Croes-Lacroix. They now live in the municipality of Houthalen, in the province of Limburg. “Eight couples before them had reached 79 years old, sometimes up to a few days of 80 years old. They are therefore the first to be able to reach this longevity”says Mr. Croes-Lacroix. “But there, what is really strong is that neither of the two is yet a hundred years old!”

Indeed, Mr. Cuyvers, born in June 1923, will celebrate his 100th birthday in June, while Mrs. Haeseldonckx, born in June 1925, will have to wait another two years before entering the closed club of centenarians.
