“A beautiful tribute song,” announces “Supreme Show” host Freezy Ed Sheeran’s new single. With “F64”, the pop star commemorates the British entrepreneur Jamal Edwards, who founded SBTV with a small team in the mid-nineties – “a network that first promoted artists from the hip-hop scene in England and later globally,” explains Freezy .
“There was a format in which 64 bars – that is, measures – are rapped.” Edwards helped initiate “Freestyle 64” and became a mentor to many of the participants. Sheeran also used the platform early in his career.
When Edwards died of a heart attack in February 2022 at the age of 31, he left a huge mourner in his wake – Sheeran felt the rug pull out from under him. His sponsor had become his closest confidant: “I miss my brother” / “I miss my brother,” he sings in the song.
In the verses, the musician lays out the raw emotions that have accompanied him since the death of his friend: «Every morning, I remember that you’re really gone / Coz it’s been a long night and I cry coz I miss my brother» – ( “Every morning I remember that you’re really gone / Because it’s been a long night and I’m crying because I miss my brother”) – is one of 64 haunting lines in which Sheeran explains his pain.
“F64” is not just a touching song, the release on SBTV should also be the starting signal for a new season of the format.
After the song spilled over to all other platforms, the Brit’s team shared a snippet from the 2020 documentary “Chasing The Present” via the official EdHQ Instagram channel, in which the singer talks to filmmaker James Sebastiano regarding the therapeutic effect of making music for him: “If something bad happens to me that makes me deeply sad, I write regarding it and say everything that’s on my mind.”
