Founded in 2014 in Luxembourg, the start-up Space Cargo Unlimited has set itself a mission worthy of a science fiction film: send a factory into space. Designed by Thales Alenia Space, REV1 is billed as “the first reusable automated spacecraft dedicated to in-orbit manufacturing”. It should take the form of a vessel 4.5 meters in length and have a capacity of one ton. Enough to embed 3D printers, bioreactors or passive containers, depending on customer needs. Space Cargo Unlimited is already considering applications, from electronics to medicine to cosmetics.
