After the traumatic hearing in which the difficulties in the translation of the crimes imputed to John Poulos were exposed, the family of the DJ Valentina Trespalacios, the young woman who was found dead in a garbage container in Bogotá, and who would have been murdered by the US citizen, will request the change of translator for the resumption of judicial proceedings.
Poulos was charged by the Attorney General’s Office with the crimes of aggravated femicide and concealment, alteration or destruction of material evidence, during the hearing to legalize the capture and imputation of charges, which he did not accept.
However, the lawyer for the Trespalacios family, Miguel Ángel Del Río Malo, will ask the guarantee control judge handling the case this Monday to change the translator; this due to the complexity of what comes in the hearing that will continue on Tuesday, January 31, starting at 9:00 in the morning.
“That is why we have already made a prior request to the guarantee control judge regarding the change of translator, and we will insist on Monday in writing and formally, until the guarantee control judge assesses the possibility of changing the translator,” explained the Lawyer Del Rio Malo.
The body of the woman, who was 22 years old, was found by a recycler in a travel suitcase, which was abandoned in a garbage container located in the town of Fontibón.
“We think that it does not have the dimension to damage the structure of the audience. However, the possibility of changing the person seems important to us and we have taken great care in the issue of the structure of the audience, because following each space the accused is asked if he has understood what the translator is transmitting to him ”, the lawyer said.
Despite this, he explained that at the hearing this Friday he realized that while he told him regarding some elements, specifically a cell phone, “she told him that she was talking regarding money of regarding $7,000. And that hadn’t been established and I hadn’t told him either,” Del Rio said.
“What we want, fundamentally, is to guarantee that the audience gets along in the best way and apart from that it will be very complex. This is a procedure that may be taking approximately 10 to 12 hours and obviously technical concepts must be specified, related to reasonable authorship interference, raids on charges. In short, many concepts that require the greatest rigor and that the defendant understands perfectly, ”he added.
Poulos’ hearing, who requested that he be kept in a single cell because he fears for his safety, had to be suspended due to flaws in the translation. The man, in the same way, said that he will look for a new translator for his defense.
