Parents are increasingly trying to incorporate healthy habits into their children’s lives from an early age. In recent years, the use of sunglasses in childhood has grown.
“I always tell parents to think regarding their skin: who would take a baby to the beach without a protective filter or a hat? Why not think regarding it logically and do the same with the eyes? The crystalline lens -which is one of the many filters that the eye has- of the child is more immature and filters ultraviolet rays more, it is more logical than scientific, “said ophthalmologist Ricardo Goñi in communication with Cadena 3 Rosario.
Over the years, as explained by the specialist, ultraviolet radiation accumulates. “It is a factor of physical protection once morest the environment, dusty wind and, in addition, ultraviolet radiation. It is cumulative, think regarding the skin of people who exposed themselves a lot when young, it wrinkles as an adult, the eye does not wrinkle, but it accumulates cataracts, as the Chinese say: health is a piggy bank that is saved today to have later ”, he assured.
Now, not only do parents have to decide whether or not their children will start using eye protection, but also where to get it. “A sunglasses bought on the street is smoked, but not the filter and that is extremely dangerous because the pupil remains open and more ultraviolet radiation enters, it is worse than not wearing anything,” warned the specialist doctor.
Goñi assured regarding the importance of educating and preventing people’s eye care. “Health will always be cheaper than illness. That is why we insist on preventive medicine, for that we must inform”.
However, he affirmed that politics does not always help or accompanies the doctors’ decision. “We are doing work at the political level so that the priorities are well placed. The politician thinks regarding the next election, unfortunately. I see it as feasible, we have patient legislators, it is transmitted to them and if they think that the initiative can bring them a vote, they listen. We have a draft bill underway with ophthalmologists across the country to incorporate these protections into law,” he concluded.
