AV1 Codec for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards can be used on Discord

The GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards in your hands have another use!

NVIDIA Product Manager Gerard Delgado announced on his Twitter that the Discord platform has now started AV1 Codec provided by NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series.

Before the official announcement, Discord can only support OpenH264, or H.264; the full name of AV1 is AOMedia Codec 1.

Discord uses P2P streaming, so they will check if the viewers on your channel can watch it using AV1, if there is no way to decode it using AV1, then those viewers will automatically switch to H.264 for them to watch.

AV1 helps reduce video bandwidth usage at high resolution and high frame rate. At this stage, it is uncertain whether Intel and AMD will follow up. After all, the two graphics cards also support AV1 codec.

If you want to enable AV1 in Discord, you need to enter “Voice & Video” in “User Settings”, and you can see AV1 Video Codec in the “Advanced” option.
