In Côte d’Ivoire, artists – all disciplines combined – have a legal status which was formalized by a decree in October 2021. But it must be refined with all the actors in this sector.

The aim of this reform is to structure the cultural sector, hitherto dominated by the informal sector. To professionalize it. It is a whole legal framework around the profession of artist – from the performing arts to cinema or music – which is being put in place.
It is thus planned to issue a professional card and therefore, upstream, to identify and list all the trades in this branch. Another novelty is the establishment of a minimum wage for each service. The amount has not yet been defined, but discussions have been launched with cultural actors.
« The decree provides that a minimum wage be indicated when the artists will have to perform and it is this work that must be done together because each artist has his specificity according to his sector. », specifies Françoise Remarck, Minister of Culture.
Fadal Dey is a reggae singer. This artist relies on the social benefits that will accompany this status, such as retirement. ” If retirement is legally recognized, it’s very good for us, because today we see how certain artists end up. When an artist falls ill, you always have to contribute to treat him when he was, at a certain moment, at the top of his career.. »
Several meetings are planned between the cultural actors and the bearers of this reform to refine each point of this status. At the same time, nearly 2,500 young people will be trained in jobs in the creative industries.
