World Surfing League adopts Apple Watch as official device

A world surfing league (World Surf Leagueor WSL) announced today that it will adopt the Apple Watch as official equipment of the sport’s championship. Athletes will be informed regarding data, details, points and other relevant information from the app WSL Surferdeveloped in the Series 8 and Ultra models especially for this purpose.

According to the League, the Apple Watch is uniquely suited to be used for this task because of its “big, bright display, rugged design and cellular network connectivity”. Thus, surfers can have easy access to important information amidst the battery of tests.

The Apple Watch’s unique capabilities, ease of use and incredible water resistance make it the ideal solution to support our competing surfers in extreme conditions on our world tour. Surfers need critical information while they are competing and the WSL Surfer app, which we developed for the Apple Watch, provides real-time data that will help the League Scoring System communicate with competitors in the water. We are very excited to release this new feature and allow Championship athletes to focus on their performance and improve competition throughout the 2023 season.

Eric LoganCEO of the World Surfing League

the brazilian surfer Italo Ferreira endorsed the words of the director of the competition, noting that “the noise of the wind and the waves sometimes makes it impossible to hear the warnings when competing, which means that you can miss crucial information”. For him, the Apple Watch completely changes the situation by helping athletes to stay on track at a time with so many worries.

Already Eric Jue, marketing director for the Apple Watch, said he was excited regarding using the product in competition, allowing athletes to see important information right on the wrist. He also highlighted the importance of advanced functions for this use to materialize, such as a high-resolution display, durability and a “powerful platform for organizations to develop their apps”.

Each athlete will receive a watch with the application already installed before each race. According to the League, the app has been tested over the last two seasons to ensure that it meets the demands of the competition – and athletes will receive the necessary training to use the solution.

Very cool, isn’t it?
