Model Cintia Dicker, partner of surfer Pedro Scooby, revealed the reason behind the surgery that the couple’s daughter had to undergo shortly following birth. According to her, the baby, whose name is Aurora, was diagnosed with gastroschisis, a congenital gastrointestinal malformation.
Cintia told in an interview for Vogue Magazine that she discovered the pregnancy early on. When doing the morphological examination, she and Scooby received the news that their daughter had gastroschisis.
What is gastroschisis
The digestive tract surgeon Gustavo Patury, from Hospital São Luiz and head of the Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery, explains that gastroschisis is a congenital defect of the baby’s abdominal wall, which does not close completely. The opening causes part of the intestine and other viscera to exit through the hole, which is exposed to amniotic fluid during pregnancy. When exposed, these viscera are at increased risk of inflammation and infection.
