On Tuesday, France returned 15 women and 32 children who were detained in jihadist camps in northeastern Syria, the Foreign Ministry announced.
“The minors have been handed over to the agencies charged with helping children, and they will be provided with medical and social follow-up,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that “the adults have been handed over to the competent judicial authorities.”
This is the third operation of this kind following France returned 16 women and 35 children on July 5, 2022, and before that 15 women and 50 children in October.
The women and children who were returned on Tuesday, who are from the families of the jihadists of the Islamic State, were in the Roj camp, which is under the Kurdish administration and located fifteen kilometers from the Iraqi-Turkish border.
Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Canada have begun to return a number of their citizens detained in Syria.
London also returned two British citizens following it was proven that they were victims of human smuggling gangs.
