The temperature in the capital Seoul dropped deeply, down to -18 degrees Celsius

According to the Korea National Meteorological Agency, the temperature in Seoul on January 24 varied from -9 degrees Celsius to -18 degrees Celsius.

The Korea National Meteorological Agency (KMA) has issued warnings for the coldest wave of the year for most of the country, and said the cold front will affect the entire capital Seoul in the coming weeks. on January 23, due to the cold air mass accumulating in Siberia spilling over the Korean peninsula, causing the temperature to drop sharply.

According to the KMA, although the temperature in Seoul on the morning of January 24 was recorded at -18 degrees Celsius, due to strong winds, the actual perceived coldness was up to -28 degrees Celsius.

The warning was also issued simultaneously for many areas in Incheon, 27km west of Seoul, and the provinces of Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungcheong and North Jeolla. This is also considered the coldest wave this winter in Korea.

KMA forecasts daytime temperatures in Seoul on January 24 will range from -9 degrees Celsius to -18 degrees Celsius, while most localities in Korea also record temperatures at -10 degrees Celsius.

On January 25, the temperature in Seoul is forecast to drop further down to -18 degrees Celsius (actually it is -28 degrees Celsius), while the temperature in the southern regions of Korea, Gwangju City and Busan will also drop to -12 degrees Celsius.

According to KMA’s forecast, the cold weather in Jeju Island and Honam region (including Gwangju City, South and North Jeolla Province) will continue throughout this week. In addition, these two areas are also forecast to receive a lot of snow.

On January 24 and 25, a maximum snowfall of over 70cm is forecast in the mountains of Jeju Island, Ulleung Island and Dokdo Island. In coastal areas on Jeju Island and the western part of Honam, over 20cm of snow is forecast.

Faced with this situation, people are advised to avoid accidents caused by slippery roads on the way from hometown to big cities following the Lunar New Year holiday.

Many cities in the south of South Korea are forecast to face a similar cold spell, with the lowest morning temperature below -12 degrees Celsius for more than two days in a row. This cold wave has caused Korean airlines to suspend domestic flights due to cold warnings and heavy snowfall.

Besides, accident warnings due to slippery roads are also issued on all highways nationwide.
