Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma will consider reducing the number of madrasas in the state. The action is part of reforming madrasas. In the first phase, the number of madrasas in the state will be reduced. Then the government wants to start registration and bring a system of providing public education to students through madrasas. Himanta Biswa Sharma stated that he has consulted with the Madrasa authorities and has their support.
Earlier, Assam Police Chief Bhaskar Jyoti Mahant had stated that discussions on reforming madrasas in the state are in progress. This is followed by the Chief Minister’s response. Smaller madrasas will be merged with larger ones. The decision was taken on the basis of discussions with 68 Madrasa authorities regarding the reform. According to the police, anti-national activities are taking place in small madrassas in Assam. State DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahant said that to overcome this menace, madrasas are being merged and registration is compulsory.
