Mirna Moukarzel: Platform drama competes with films

Beirut: Huda Assir

The Lebanese actress, Mirna Moukarzel, performs her acting roles with a high degree of professionalism, to the extent that she corresponds to every new role and makes a noteworthy case out of it. Perhaps her eagerness to read is the main reason behind her understanding and studying the characters she plays, which she chooses very carefully, because she is looking for quality. Primarily, and not the space or number of roles.. For her, neither fame nor money justified her entering the field of acting and continuing in it, if it did not stem from the pleasure of performing and the love of the profession.. In TV dramas, she has dozens of prominent works through which she was able to establish her position in the acting arena Such as “An Invitation to the Unknown”, “The Returning”, “By Accident”, “If We Were Met”, etc., and in the cinema, her latest work was the movie “All Roads Lead to Rome”, which we started our meeting with by talking regarding:

* You have finally returned from the Red Sea Film Festival, following your participation in the movie “All Roads Lead to Rome.” What do you say regarding this participation?

– Our participation in the film in the festival was before its official release in the Lebanese theaters, and it was a remarkable success in the festival, which is classified under the “Arab masterpieces” category. The Arab press praised the film, and among the beautiful words I heard regarding it there is that the film brought to mind the natural beauty of Lebanon.

Is the film more elitist than commercial?

– It combines the two aspects, as it does not drown in “scratching the head”, and does not reach the purely commercial stage. In short, it is a world film par excellence, in its simplicity, a story in which the narcissistic hero escapes from the noise of the city to a place where he seeks calm and tranquility, within the framework of simple events, without affectation. He sees himself in a different way, and falls in an unexpected love that might happen at any time or place.

Q: This means that the Lebanese film industry is fine, in your opinion?

– She is not well, given the current difficult circumstances that we live in at all levels, but I always say that it is our destiny not to give up, and whenever we have the ability to work, this means that we deserve success, and do not forget that the filming of the movie “All Roads Lead to Rome” was filmed in glory The “Corona” crisis, and for me, with its fears and challenges, was an outlet to get out of four walls, and I took my two sons with me during filming to the Cedars area, where they continued their studies via the Internet from there, and today’s filmmakers must think in terms of art and not in terms of The commercial perspective for our artistic existence to continue.

hard days

* Are you a supporter of working in art for the sake of art in these difficult days?

Certainly, I did not study at the university for the sake of fame or work for 10 years only, but rather to deal with art as a profession, and I am not good at anything else.

* How did you work to develop yourself?

– I am an avid reader, reading for me is a daily meal that is more important than eating, and all my readings fill my memory with certain characters and features. The roles and characters you provided.

* Do you read everything that falls under your hand?

– I choose stories that depend on certain characters, either from different classes, or from a different time, earlier or later, imaginary. I also read biographies, and matters related to psychology, almost everything..

* Do you try to translate the ideas that are brewing in your head as a result of reading in writing?

During the quarantine period, I experimented, so I wrote, and I got tired of writing because I re-read a lot, to make sure that I did not stray from the line in any of my characters, because when an actor writes, he differs in his writing from an ordinary writer, and following 26 episodes I stopped writing, and decided that I re-read to improve it more, but I haven’t offered the work to anyone yet.

own way

Is acting tired?

– It is not reading paper and listening to it in front of the camera for me, and I did not work in this way. Rather, I often asked the writer to give myself the same meaning and content, but in my own way and words, because I cannot present the character on carbon paper.

* There is a remarkable theatrical movement today, knowing that we live in a time of drama, how do you view it?

I am very happy with it, because I love the stage and a world in which I communicate directly with the audience with an unparalleled feeling, and I eagerly await my return to it, following I can leave my two children alone, because I am not the type to entrust the responsibility of his children to anyone, no matter what, and I do not want my life Professionalism affects them, as they are the priority in my life, and that is why they accompanied me to the opening of the film for the first time.

* How do you view the Lebanese drama movement, and do you think that television is in danger of confronting the platforms?

– If I were asked this question before, in the year 2015, for example, I would have said that television is in danger, but today there is a global wave of making series for those who do not want to go to the cinema, and “Netflix” has become a destination for many genre enthusiasts to watch series that almost compete with movies, It includes all the elements of cinema, which restored its position to television in the recent period.

* Are you with the idea of a quote?

– I am not once morest it, but on the condition that it resembles our society and our reality. I am with quoting, not copying, and this is present in all countries of the world.

* Have you run out of ideas in Lebanon?

– Ideas are the same at all times and places, from 200 years to today, all of them have been used, and a skilled writer is the one who knows how to deal with the topic and ideas in a smart way to make them appear new, but the problem in our Arab world is that we write for people.
