Oncologist told in which cases herpes can become a symptom of cancer or AIDS

Chronic, non-healing sores caused by the herpes simplex virus may be a sign of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or cancer. Elena Batukhtina, Head of the Department of General Oncology and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, spoke regarding how to distinguish a sore from more serious health problems. She is quoted “Sport Express”.

Herpes, though unpleasant, but rather quickly passing disease. If sores and blisters in the corners of the lips appear constantly, you should be wary.

“If an ulcer, sore, blister does not heal for a long time, you should definitely contact an oncologist within 2-3 weeks,” the specialist advised, adding that if the neoplasm first disappears and then reappears, then you need to urgently run to the hospital.

According to the doctor, only an oncologist can perform a high-quality diagnosis. To distinguish a sore from cancer, you will need a study of the cellular composition – with a biopsy or scraping of the neoplasm.

“The doctor scrapes the surface of the neoplasm with a special tool and transfers the resulting material to the glass, which is then sent to the cytology laboratory. The result, as a rule, can be obtained within one to three days. A longer time, but also more informative method is a biopsy. The surgeon, under local anesthesia, cuts out or pinches off a piece of tissue from 0.2 to 0.5 cm and sends it for histological examination. The result is prepared from three to 14 working days,” said the head of the general oncology department.
