The EU is closely watching the progress of the talks in Mexico. In December of last year, it was hinted that if progress is made in the dialogue, the sanctions might be lightened.
The European Union (EU) is studying the possibility of making a change in its policy towards Venezuela in light of the movements in the opposition, the diplomatic reconnection with Caracas of countries such as Brazil or Colombia, in addition to the prospect of resuming negotiations in Mexico with the government of Nicolás Maduro.
In view of these events, the high representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, will address the situation with the community foreign ministers in the Council that will be held next Monday in Brussels.
“The situation is totally different, I don’t know if the EU is going to adapt its policy, but there will be a reflection by the High Representative on it, what do you do when circumstances change?” a senior official told Europa Press.
The objective is to transform the policy that the EU maintains towards Venezuela, taking into account what has happened in recent months, although for this it will be necessary to open a reflection among the 27, who maintain sanctions once morest the Venezuelan Government.
Diplomatic sources explained to the agency that among the tools that the EU manages is to revive the Contact Group with Venezuela to resume relations with Caracas and try to influence a democratic solution to the crisis.
The analysis of European diplomacy stresses that in the last six months several changes have taken place, such as the reestablishment of relations with Colombia and Brazil following the arrival of the governments of Gustavo Petro and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
In addition, internal changes in the opposition are added, with the dismissal of Juan Guaidó as “president in charge” and the new phase of reorganization of the opposition.
The diplomatic movements of the United States or of Spain and Portugal, which have restored their ambassadors to Caracas, also weigh heavily.
On the other hand, the EU is closely watching the progress of the talks in Mexico. In December of last year, Borrell himself hinted that if progress is made in the dialogue on holding “democratic, free and fair” elections, steps might be taken to lighten the sanctions.
