South Korea’s public sector employment rate hit a record high thanks to the government’s efforts amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Statistics Korea has said.

Specifically, the number of jobs in public areaincluding central and provincial governments, social security funds and public companies totaled 2,839,000 in 2022, up 2.6% from the previous year, according to Statistics Korea. .

The government has increased public sector employment to help vulnerable people, such as the middle-aged and unemployed youthfind a decent job amid the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.

Employment provided by the central and provincial governments accounted for 30.8% and 53.1% of total public sector employment, respectively, while employment by state enterprises accounted for 14.5%.

Of total public employment, those in their 40s accounted for the highest share of 26.7%, followed by those in their 30s and 50s with 24.5% and 23.8%, respectively. /.
