British actor Julian Sands has been missing for five days following hiking in southern California. The 65-year-old star of several Oscar-nominated films, including “A Room With a View,” was reported missing Friday from a hiking trail on Mount San Antonio, also known as Mount Baldy, in the San Gabriel Mountains area, a spokeswoman for the San Sheriff’s Office said Bernardino County, Gloria Huerta.
A ground search and rescue operation in the area, regarding 40 miles from downtown Los Angeles, had to be called off Saturday due to conditions on the route and the risk of avalanches, Huerta said. The search has not been resumed since then.
Search with helicopters and drones
Authorities said they would continue to search for Sands with helicopters and drones, weather permitting. The search on the ground will be resumed when it is safe.
Representatives of the actor, who lives in north Hollywood, initially did not comment. Sands starred alongside Helena Bonham Carter in James Ivory’s Room With a View (1985). He also took on leading roles in Son of Warlock (1989), Arachnophobia (1990), Naked Lunch (1991), Boxing Helena (1993) and Leaving Las Vegas (1995). He has also appeared in smaller roles in film and television for decades.
The latest string of storms that have created dangerous conditions in the mountains also hit southern California on Friday and continued through the weekend. Two other hikers died recently in the area.
