Jeep, the iconic maker of off-road vehicles, has been named Europe’s least reliable automaker, following a survey of nearly 25,000 owners.
The “What Car” site asked owners of used cars up to five years old how often their cars had broken down in the last two years.
The Reliability Survey asked how long the repairs took and how much they cost for an overall score of 100.
The higher the score, the more reliable the car brand: Jeep scored just 77 percent.
Individual Jeep models were criticized throughout the survey by owners for their unreliability.
The second least reliable manufacturer was Land Rover with a score of 81.4 percent.
The Land Rover Discovery was ranked the least reliable used model when the survey was revealed last week.
The third least reliable automaker was Fiat, also criticized by owners in the survey for regularly failing.
Jim Holder, editorial director of What Car said: “The three most unreliable manufacturers, Jeep, Land Rover and Fiat, are sadly familiar and tell a tale of companies that repeatedly promise to do better but never seem to turn the dial.”
‘Jeep took the wooden spoon with a terrible set of results and a miserable score. That at least saved some of the blushes at Land Rover and Fiat, two other perennially underperformers.
Land Rover’s continuing woes once once more highlight the disconnect between the brand’s values and the appeal of its vehicles and the ownership experience.
“Amazingly, these three brands continue to get away with selling a large number of hugely profitable cars despite this,” Holder said.
“The build quality of these vehicles and the reliability are very poor, but people keep getting it wrong.”
