Apple Is Working On Homemade MicroLED Displays: A Tech Push To Boost Profits And Improve Product Quality

According to analysts and some media, Apple is expected to introduce micro-LED displays in its future products, starting with theApple Watch Second-generation Ultra, scheduled for release in late Q3 2024.

Micro-LED displays use extremely small light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for the backlight used by the display, which results in more accurate colors, darker blacks, and better contrast. Also, they don’t promote screen wear like LCD and OLED panels do. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the ” images look like they are painted on the glass of the device« .

Apple acquired micro-LED maker LuxVue in 2014, but the company is not expected to be involved in the full manufacturing process of micro-LED components, which is why LG Display is building a small line of assembly for the production of micro-LEDs which will start in the second half of 2024.

After Apple uses micro-LED technology for the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra, the iPhone is expected to be the next product to feature micro-LED displays. Eventually, Apple might use micro-LED technology for the screens of iPad tablets and Mac computers.
